AstraZeneca has lost patent on the popular heartburn drug Nexium, which is under patent for several months.
The US Food and Drug Administration has granted AstraZeneca’s request for a six-month extension to compensate the maker of the drug for failing to warn users of the risk of ulcers.
The agency also said that Nexium “has not been shown to be effective” in relieving acid reflux.
“Ineffective Nexium has been linked to a number of serious health problems, including heart attacks and strokes,” said the FDA’s chairman and chief executive, Scott Gottlieb. “Erectile dysfunction, a condition that can affect men in their 40s and 50s, and depression, a condition known as hypothyroidism, are all risk factors for ulcers.”
The FDA said that the company had no evidence that Nexium would cause ulcers, although it did warn that the drug does not protect against a life-threatening infection.
The drug, which costs $30 a tablet, is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adults 18 years and older with peptic ulcers.
The drug is also approved for use in children, with a maximum dose of 40 milligrams per day. The drug’s label notes that it is not recommended to treat heartburn, and that it should only be used under the supervision of a doctor.
